Forest School Teacher

Seeds Class

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Educational Facilitator

  • Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of all children in care, especially the members of your assigned class, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

  • Design learning invitations derived from daily observations and documentation of play.

  • Be willing to learn Reggio-Emilia documentation practices and Airie's chosen software.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child in your care.

  • Collaboratively work with and support the Academy teacher to fulfill Airie's mission.

  • Foster respect for all wildlife.

  • Maintain child and family confidentiality.

  • Ensure that the learning environment is free from hazards.

  • Clean the learning environments as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of play- and nature-based learning.

  • Positive discipline practices that focus on coregulation and connection.

  • Be able and willing to spend a significant portion of time outdoors.

  • Be flexible in going with the flow of play in a child-led, yes environment.

 

Education and Experience

Must:

  • Have earned or are close to finishing an undergraduate degree and/or certification related to early childhood education.

  • Pass a background check.

  • Be CPR and First Aid trained

 

Prefer:

  • Knowledge and/or experience with the Reggio-Emilia and Forest School methods

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge

  • Experience working with young children

Work Environment

  • Time spent on campus is divided between supporting the children's development and enhancing the learning environment.

  • Must be willing to spend long hours standing, hiking, climbing, playing, kneeling, and occasionally lifting or moving approximately 60 pounds.

  • Must be able and willing to change soiled diapers and pull-ups and assist in toileting in indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Must be able and willing to arrive on site by 8:20 a.m. to prepare for the day, and stay until 3:30 p.m. on Forest School add-on days.

  • Collaborate with the Academy teacher during the weekly mentorship meeting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Educational Facilitator

  • Playfully instruct young children for a gentle introduction into emergent literacy.

  • Be willing to learn the documentation practices and software.

  • Conduct regular critical reflection to provide developmentally appropriate emergent curriculum experiences based on each child’s needs.

  • Be passionate about co-learning with children.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child, family, and staff member at Airie.

  • Collaboratively work with other staff members to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Actively participate in the provided professional development and bonding experiences.

  • Be willing to contribute to caring for the animals on campus and foster respect for all wildlife.

  • Maintain child and family confidentiality.

  • Design learning invitations derived from daily observations and documentation of play.

  • Be willing to learn the documentation practices and software.

  • Conduct regular critical reflections to provide developmentally appropriate emergent

        curriculum experiences based on the individual child’s needs.

  • Conduct developmentally appropriate assessments of each child.

  • Be passionate about co-learning with children.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child, family, and staff member at Airie.

  • Collaboratively work with other staff members to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Actively participate in the provided professional development and bonding experiences.

  • Be willing to contribute to caring for the animals on campus and foster respect for all wildlife.

Education and Experience

Must:

  • Have a valid Tennessee teacher’s license

  • Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

  • Be (or be willing to get) CPR and First Aid trained or certified.

  • Pass a background check.

 

Prefer:

  • Early childhood endorsement, minor, or certificate.

  • Knowledge of the Reggio-Emilia mindset.

  • Experience with children aged 4 to 6 years.

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge.

Work Environment

  • Time spent on the educational campus is divided between desk work, supervision, and indoor and outdoor education of children, as well as research.

  • Provide high-quality educational experiences on a balanced calendar.

  • Must be willing to spend long hours standing, hiking, climbing, playing, kneeling, and occasionally lifting or moving approximately 50 pounds.

  • Must be able and willing to change soiled diapers and pull-ups and assist in toileting in indoor and outdoor settings.

  • They must be able and willing to arrive on site by 9:00 a.m. to prepare for the day and stay until all children have been picked up.

  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends (e.g., special events).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Substitute Teacher

  • Connect with each child in your care.

  • Collaboratively work with the educational facilitator to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Ensure that the learning environment is free from hazards.
  • Clean the learning environment as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understand play- and nature-based learning.

  • Positive discipline practices that focus on coregulation and connection.

  • Be able and willing to spend a significant portion of time outdoors.

  • Foster and support conflict resolution and emotional regulation skills in children.

  • Be flexible in going with the flow of play in a yes environment.

  • Be able to administer basic first-aid care.

 

Education and Experience

Must:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Pass a background check

 

Prefer:

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge

  • CPR and First Aid certified

  • Valid Tennessee teacher license

  • Degree in early childhood education, certification, or endorsement

  • Experience working with young children
